Community Empowerment

In 2019, FKL has started a community empowerment program to provide alternative livelihoods for communities living nearby forests. The Leuser Ecosystem has a high potential to develop Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP) such as bamboo, wild honey, dragons’ blood (jernang) and many others. FKL, Aceh Timur and Aceh Tamiang district governments collaborated to pilot a wild honey harvest programs in 6 different villages that is adjacent to the Leuser Ecosystem. Throughout 2019, the communities harvested approximately 2 tons of wild honey, which are sold to stores and individuals across Aceh. The program also created an incentive for the communities to protect the forest in order to ensure the wild honey continues to be at the highest quality. FKL hopes to implement similar programs, as well as adopting other NTFPs as a form of alternative economy for communities across the Leuser Ecosystem.
